Results of the 2008/2009 campaign lychees
In 2008/09, Madagascar has confirmed its leading position as an exporter of lychees, with nearly 24 000 tonnes exported. In terms of production, Madagascar is by far the most popular home on the European market, and for now its main competitors only about 10% of exports of lychees.
Everything looks set to be pretty good for 2008/09, the quantity was present and favorable weather conditions allowed an early start. And yet the toll remains sluggish.
The abundance kills the market. Within weeks, the influx of lychees from Madagascar, but also competing origins of the area of the Indian Ocean (Mauritius, South Africa and Reunion) has driven down prices. In the last phase of the season, significant volumes were transported by sea containers (exceeding for the first time the volumes loaded on conventional ships). These products have flooded the European markets after the holidays, a time when demand is much lower. Result, prices continued to fall.
But the effects of the economic crisis were felt on demand, less dynamic in Europe. The poor economic conditions and the fragile quality of fruit resulted in a complex marketing Product
The marketing of litchi from Madagascar 2008/2009 has been particularly difficult and STOI encountered this year in general economic slump, quantities, increasing, exacerbated face the difficult conditions of sale and sale price down from previous seasons.

Results of the 2009/2010 campaign lychees
The litchi season 2009/10 started with a week's delay, from November 25, just in time to supply European markets during the holiday season to season. The delay in starting campaign resulted in the simultaneous arrival of lychees in Mauritius, Madagascar and South Africa.
This year, transport by boat has been reorganized with a single vessel chilled cava (conventional boat) with a capacity of 7 000 pallets (5 600 tonnes) against two ago (for the same amount). The rest - that is to say, 12 000 (9 600 t) on 19 000 pallets (15 000 t) provided - will be exported by refrigerated containers.
However, because the orchards and the grouping of producers STOI are located in the region or fruit are earlier and more specifically in the area Brickaville the STOI could benefit every year as shipments and futures has been exported since November 15, 2009.
The result was better than the previous year and the demand for organic has grown lychees but many factors should penalize the industry and other openings remain to be seen.

Conclusion

The quantities too large compared to the potential for absorption of European markets, the overall average quality of fruit, the effects of the economic crisis on consumption and fierce competition between operators are elements that have disrupted the development litchi market.
This brings STOI find other outlets. The United States remains to be conquered. The analysis of the MCA, the U.S. market could absorb the excess domestic production estimated at over 50 000 t: "With its 300 million inhabitants, the United States have only 2 000 t of production in Florida and about 8 000 tonnes imported mainly from China, Mexico and Israel. "Other markets also offer potential to exploit, especially the countries of northern Europe.
